Greetings Visitors!
Welcome to my Kindergarten classroom web page! I’m Mrs. Amy Monteiro. The 2011-2012 school year is my 18th year working in early childhood education and 12th year teaching Kindergarten (11th in Westwood). I created this page to quickly and easily communicate back-and-forth with the families of the children in my class and I welcome anyone to post comments and questions to me (or to the other families) through this site. Please check back often to stay up to date with what’s going on in our classroom. You can subscribe through an rss feed reader (feed button is at the bottom left hand corner of this page) or below to receive posts via email. I’m looking forward to another fun year in KM!

Nice to be recognized…
...although it was only by some silly teacher website with no real credence. Now if it was awarded by the MTA or NEA, this button would appear right at the top of the page!

Archive for January, 2011

…now that the holidays are over, assessments are done, and report cards are written I hope I will find the time to get this blog going again. Sorry posts have been few and far between but life in KM has just been crazy…not to mention, the weather has really thrown a wrench in our normal routine!

We have started a new Math unit. Click here for the family letter that goes along with the unit. Also, now that our knowledge of letters and letter sounds are pretty solid, and we have a growing number of high frequency words (“word wall words”) that we can instantly recognize, we are moving our groups along in Reading from discussing concepts about books to some conventional reading for those groups that are ready. The groups that are not quite there yet will continue to work on the phonics skills necessary to move into conventional reading.

You should notice that the childrens’ writing should be moving along as well from just strings of letters to some phonemically spelled words and/or sentences that match their pictures. Please be sure to have your child read their writing to you when they bring it home. This is really good practice for them. I will be sending home a list of phrases that you can use to help your child as they are learning to spell and read back their writing. Please be sure to let them do the work of sounding out words and writing the sounds that they hear when they are doing any kind of writing at home. Let them use the alphabet chart that went home on Curriculum Night if they forget any letter sounds or forget how to form a letter. Spelling words for them is NOT suggested as it doesn’t give them the practice they need, but rather makes them feel like they need to rely on someone else to spell for them so it will be “correct”.

Please come to school dressed in your Patriots clothes OR red, white, and blue!

Welcome back to school! From what the kids are telling me, it sounds like everyone had a fun (yet busy) and somewhat relaxing week off. My week started out very busy but quickly turned relaxing which was very much needed. Why is it though that when I can sleep in until the late hour of 7AM, my kids decide it is a great week to get up at 5:30?!?!

We will be diving right into the meat of the curriculum this month while also getting lots of informal assessments done in time to write report cards. January is a very busy month in KM!

I also wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to all of the families who sent in gifts and/or contributed to my gift from the class this holiday season. My kids and I went crazy at Barnes & Noble picking up things for home and for school. We spent a whole afternoon there one very cold day last week! My husband and I have already gone through the Starbucks gift card (he loves his triple tall mochas and I love my salted caramel hot cocoas)! And check out my new winter jacket from LL Bean when you see me out on the playgroud! Your generosity is very much appreciated by me and my family at this time of year.
