Archive for September, 2010
A few parents have emailed me asking for the class activation code for the Scholastic Book Order. I was under the impression that there would be an easy way for parents to look that up but I just tried to log in as a parent and I see the frustration. There doesn’t seem to be an easy way to look it up! The activation code for our class is H77T7. Thank you!
This week we played 2 new (but very similar) math games, Button Match Up and Attribute Block Math Up where the children worked with a partner to find characteristics that about 2 objects that were similar and different. Ask your child who they played with and to describe how the games are played.
This afternoon I will be finalizing the September book order. Thanks to those of you who have placed an order. If you have not yet placed an order but want to, please do so by 2:00 pm. You can place your order here. The October order as well as the Just Right Books order will remain open until Friday, October 8.
The kids in KM have begun to learn about letters and the sounds that they make. Each week I will introduce 2 new letters and their sounds. We do many activities here at school to learn the sounds but I know parents want to help from home as well. With that in mind, each week I will send home a few short songs/poems that I have introduced here at school. There are many things you can do with the song/poem at home. Here are a few examples:
- Read/sing/say the song/poem with your child many times.
- Help them to draw and color the things that start with that letter in the song/poem.
- Help them to find the letter(s) in the text and circle them, trace them, and/or color them.
- Help them to come up with and to list other things that start with that letter.
- Help them to write the letter.
- Use Wikki Sticks to form the letter or to circle words that start with the letter(s). You can also use play dough.
- Keep them all in a folder or binder at home as they will be something familiar to your child that he/she can “read” over and over. This is a great pre-reading activity.
Doing any of these activities at home will help to reinforce the knowledge that they are gaining here at school. However you do not need to do them all! Two of the activities with each song/poem should be enough. If you have any questions feel free to email me or send me a note.
All About Me is a time for your child to shine! On your child’s All About Me day, they will share some information about themselves to help us all get to know them a little better. Every Monday, a My Book About Me will go home with one child in our class until everyone has had a turn. Your child, with your help, will have until the following Monday to complete and return the book. On Monday mornings your child will have about 10 minutes to share the information they have assembled . This is similar to “Show and Tell” but it focuses on your child and promotes self confidence, verbal skills, discussions, and celebrates all of our unique differences.
The All About Me book has a sentence on each page that they need to complete and an area for them to either draw a picture or to attach a photo. Most children will need your help with the words, especially early on in the year. Once completed, the books will stay in school in a special basket for the children to read over and over. These usually become favorite books in our classroom library.
Your child may also bring in one special object to share with the class (a special drawing/painting they created, a special stuffed animal, a model they built, etc.). The object must be small enough to fit in their backpack and light enough that your child can carry it to school. The object will return home with your child that same day.
Enjoy the time you and your child spend working on this special project! Thank you for your help.
In case you were unable to attend Curriculum Night this evening, here are links to my powerpoint presentation as well as all of the handouts from me. If you have any questions about tonight please feel free to send a comment to this post and I will do my best to answer them.
